Indonesian Culinary - Martabak

There is such kind of food in Indonesian culinary which is called as martabak. When you say about martabak in Indonesia, it could be salty/savoury martabak and sweet martabak. Although they have slightly different ingredient and shape, we still call them martabak. In Indonesia, martabak is one of most popular street food.

Salty martabak, others mentioned it as murtabak, mutabbaq, originally came from Yemen and Saudi Arabia. It is also commonly found in India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei and Thailand. The name of mutabbaq in Arabic means 'folded'. In Indonesia it called martabak malabar, martabak mesir, and martabak asin.

The salty/savioury one contain egg, meat, garlic, onion. The sweet one, Indonesian people called it 'martabak manis' or 'kue terang bulan (bright moon cake), martabak Bandung. The cooking method and ingedients are different, martabak manis using dough (flour which also use yeast and baking soda). The dough is back on circle shaped pan, and than after couple minutes, margarine, sugar, crushed peanuts, chocolate and cheese are spreading into martabak and then it is folded in half. So the topping of martabak manis is in the middle.

Nowaday, there are many variety of martabak manis. The topping is vary, also the dough. Martabak become most popular food, especially in Bandung where the culinary always invent new and creative one. In Bandung, Kedai Martabak Tropica, introduce new style of martabak manis. Here we can choose your own martabak dough whether it will be original one, pandan flavour, red velvel flavour or green tea flavour. So does the topping of martabak. There are a lot of choice of topping, from original one (crushed peanut, chocolate, cheese), until the modern style such as using green tea, cakalang fish, ovomaltine, nutella, toblerone, durian, kit kat, oreo, hersey's and other. Cakalang martabak is a special recipe from master of Indonesian culinary, Bondan Winarno which made it only for Kedai Martabak Tropica Bandung. Well, it kinda a special taste when savoury meet the sweet in one plate of sweet martabak. Cakalang is kind of fish, commonly found in Sulawesi, part of East of Indonesia. Cakalang fish flake is cooked with some ingredients which resulted savoury taste. It a great taste I think. I really want to taste Cakalang Martabak when come to Bandung.

You can choose you own style of martabak whether you want it as original with variety topping, you want it as pizza martabak, you want is as 10 topping martabak or you want the dough become thin and cripsy martabak ... just choose your own.

LIGHTHOUSE, ANYER, BANTEN

Go to Anyer again!!! This time is go to old lighthouse at Anyer. Lighthouse (or we call "Mercusuar" in Bahasa) in Anyer is the second oldest lighthouse in Indonesia. It is built in 1885 during Dutch colonial in the time of Willem III.

Anyer lighthouse is 75.5 metres in height and having 18 floors with the light ball is placed in the top of the houselights.

The kids were very excited, they enthusiastic climbed the iron stairs to go upstairs. I was really surprised looking that they were not felt exhausted at all climbing 18 floors, while their mother hardly could climb. Come on mom...!!!

Wow...!!! Fantastic!!
The scenery from the top of the lighthouse was amazing! The sea side, the road side, really spectacular. The wind blew touch our face.
The kids were excited by the light ball inside the lighthouse which can be rotated 360 degree, they kept asking what is that!! Probably they were thinking, it is not like as the ball lamp at their house :)

This Anyer lighthouse also known as zero point of Anyer - Panarukan Street. Street from Anyer to Panarukan which is approximately 1000 km in lenght was built during the Ducth colonial in the order of Deandels General which was during the construction has sacrificed many people within 1 year construction.

The beach near the lighthouse is also beautiful. The kids and their mother loved to take picture here. Many beautiful point can be shoot and no wonder that many wedding photo taken here.

Watch out, the water is poured!!! Bomblazter make the kids excited!

Well, actually we had an opportunity to go to Water Boom Pantai Indah Kapuk on company outing program. That time, after many discussion, we decided to go to Water Boom Pantai Indah Kapuk since the kids probably will like playing with water very much. Then, after the kids is satisfied enough playing with water, we planned to go to Karawaci Shopping Center. Kid's mother would be very excited, I though.

There are many recreation facilities, for kids such as bomblazter, kiddy pool; and also for family such as wave pool, wild river, pleasure pool; or for adult such as speed slide, etc.

Wave pool attraction and kiddy poo
l, the kids enjoyed much.

Here also the kids pool with slide,
water, water everywhere!

It's time to go home kids! Time to say good bye! Sayonara!!!

During our way back to Cilegon, Banten Province, we stopped by at Karawaci Shopping Center at Tangerang city for dinner. After l
ooked around to find anything to eat, we decided to have dinner at "Kedai Nyonya" where you can find Indonesian old nuance. Furniture here are resemble to those used before modern age. I could found everything when I was child, the door, the chairs, the table, the lamp, etc. I was so interesting, took me back to the situation when I was child.

We tried the Kedai Nyonya Fried Rice, Asparagus Corn Soup, and some porridge for the kids. Delicious!

TANJUNG LESUNG RESORT, BANTEN PROVINCE,

I forgot exactly when we got here to Tanjung Lesung. What I remember is that at the time, we didn't have any intention to go here. Just driving along to Anyer. My wife said that she wanted to go to Marbella beach, but then after we arrive at Marbella hotel, it was very crowded, so we decided to continue driving to Tanjung Lesung.

Tanjung Lesung
lies in the tip of Banten Province, precisely in Pandeglang district. It took about 2 hours from Cilegon to Tanjung Lesung, or approximately 4 hours from Jakarta. After passes through Anyer district which is full with beachs and hotels along right and left side, we entered to Pandeglang district. The scenery along the road near to Tanjung Lesung was beautiful, a lot of green field of rice field.

Then we arrived at Tanjung Lesung resort area. Before the entrance to resort area, there is security post where checking is required. The personnel there would ask you whether you have had reservation or not. At that time, because we just would like to have sight seeing only, so we told them that we just want to go around for survey :)
There will be entrance fee for only sight seeing. It just 20,000 rupiah at that time.

After about 5 minutes driving, we could see the Kalica Resort and Villa Bay Resort. Inside the resort there are many facilities, including restaurant, beach, swimming fool in each type of villa or cottage. The white sand beach was very beautiful. My children couldn't stand for those sea water calling. They just straightly went to the beach and play with the sand.

The swimming fool was directly faced the sea side, and in front of the restaurant. Many tourists came to Tanjung Lesung during that time.

Ah, the mount of Krakatau also could be seen from here. As you may know that mount Krakatau is one of the active volcano in Indonesia. Located in the Sunda Strait between the islands of Java and Sumatra, the Krakatau Island Nature Reserve is the spectacular site of the world's youngest active volcano . Anak Krakatau (The son of Krakatau) has been steadily rising out of the sea since 1930 and is considered as one of the best examples of recent island volcanism and tropical vegetation succession.

There were also playground for kids to play around, and if you want to go around the beach with bicycle, there was a bicycle rent near the playground.
Ah, I forgot, there was also Beach Club where you can find many sea water adventures. They offer many facilities in order to satisfy the customer who loves sea water sport.

So, just check it out by yourself, the beauty of Tanjung Lesung Beach!

RAJASA HOTEL - NEAR HOTEL TO BORUBUDUR

From Losari, we went to Magelang through south route. People say that south route has many beautiful views rather than north route (via PANTURA). Yep…the route was very interesting. There were many plantations along this route. Rice field, onion field, corn field and also tea plantation could be found along the south route. You’ll never feel bored if you go through this way. However, I think this route take much time rather than the north route. You can imagine, we left Dian hotel at Losari at 08.00 am in the morning and we arrived at Borobudur, Magelang at about 02.00 pm.

There are many hotels near Borobudur temple. But, our choice was Rajasa hotel because the rate is fair enough and it is really near to Borobudur complex, just side by side with the complex. And according to the recommendation given in the internet that Rajasa hotel has good view and you can see the sleeping Budha.

Well, the first time we arrived there, the first impression was not convincing, look like the old hotel. But we very tired to look for the other hotel. Actually next to it there is Manohara hotel which is located inside the Borobudur temple complex, but it is expensive enough for our pocket. So we decided to stay in Rajasa hotel. You just need 10 minutes to walk to reach Borobudur temple gate.

Entering inside Rajasa hotel, we should take our impression earlier. Well, it is very interesting. The wall is covered by such kind river brick; well it is very cool and unique. Behind the building there is rice field panorama with the range of hills. The breeze was very fresh. I like this hotel.

Then I wondered where I could found the view of sleeping Buddha? Well, I couldn’t see any of Borobudur temple part from here at all. Than I read again the article from the internet. I was wrong! It said that we can find the range of hills that look like sleeping Buddha. Then, I tried to look into the range of hills, well, I didn’t think that it look like sleeping Buddha. But when the weather clears enough, finally I could imagine the configuration of hills that looked like a sleeping Buddha over there, reflected on the range of hills. It is very wonderful.

The price is also cheap enough. The lowest class is 160,000 IDR (USD 16) without air conditioner only fan. However, the weather is cool enough, so I don’t think that we need an air conditioner, but maybe hot water is needed.

Oh, for the meal! Rajasa hotel also serves many kind of food for your meals. However, if you want to find other kind of foods, along way from Rajasa hotel to Borobudur area there are a lot of food stalls. At that time, we tried ‘sate’ (small pieces of meat that roasted on skewer) in front of Borobudur gate. The stall is called “Sate Madura”. Well, it was delicious enough, so no wondered there were a lot of people queued in that place. We ate for 3 portions ‘sate’ with ‘lontong’ (food containing rice steamed in a banana leaf) at place included 3 glasses of orange juice and we also had it to take away, the cost only around 50,000 – 60,000 IDR (USD 5 – 6).
